Welcome to Bred to Perfection Episode 32
This is an interview with Dr. Frederic Cantor of the USDA about the latest Newcastle’s Outbreak, and what you can do to protect your flock.
In this episode of Bred to Perfection, we spoke with Dr. Frederic Cantor of the USDA, about Newcastle’s Disease and the latest outbreak here in the San Diego County. More specifically, Ramona.
This conversation was important, because It helps to establish and maintain a good healthy relationship between bird owners and the CDFA. And, it is our hope that this show (Bred to Perfection) will help nurture that relationship.
We had a great discussion.
We talked about:
- What is Newcastle’s Disease?
- How contagious is this disease?
- What are the symptoms?
- How is it spread?
- The importance of Biosecurity
- Why it’s important that you don’t move your birds?
- Problem associated with Newcastle’s Vaccines and Vaccinations
- Preventative measures
- What determines the various zones, and they are implemented?
- What’s going on with the San Diego County outbreak?
- And last but not least, where we stand now as far as when we can get back to a normal life of raising chickens. In other words, when can we repopulate again?
- And so much more!

I really appreciate Dr. Cantor of the USDA for coming on the show today to inform residents of San Diego County what this all means and what they can do to get through this.
Ramona Residence should attend the Town Meeting at the Ramona Library, Monday, September 9th at 6:30pm.
Special Note: We’ve gotten a little bit of feedback from some of you folks that are advising against attending this meeting. They’ve stated that by going to this meeting, you may inadvertently contract this disease from someone at the meeting that isn’t practicing strict biosecurity practices.
If you are practicing good biosecurity, you shouldn’t have any worries about bringing this disease home with you. Just make sure that you are not wearing the same clothes and shoes that you did to the meeting out to your chicken yard. Have some spray bleach handy for when you do get back home to spray your shoes and by all means, wash your hands frequently.
