Today, we are talking with Dr. Delon Alwar from South Africa, who is a veterinarian and breeder of Aseel’s and American Games.
He’s a member of the Breeders Academy and we are going to help him take his strain to the next level. In years past, Dr. Alwar found it difficult to find the right information on breeding, selection and genetics. Now that he’s a member of the Breeders Academy, not only is he finding the information he needs, but now he’s taking what he has learned and passing it to his fellow breeders. That is what the Breeders Academy is all about!
Dr. Alwar shares how he acquired his birds, what kind of birds they were, and why he has found the American Games, not only fascinating, but as a challenging project, one that he enjoys very much. As we analyze his birds, we talk about the attributes his fowl are expressing that are beneficial, but we also talk about the traits that need some work.
- Together, we discuss what is important when creating a strain, and how that relates to the fowl he is working with. We also talk about the benefits of breeding towards the recessive when creating a uniform and consistent strain.
- We even delve into the genetics of defects, how to deal with traits that are dominant, defects that are recessive, and how polygenic traits can be improved or how polygenic defects can be eliminated.
- We also discuss the science and myth of inbreeding. Why many avoid inbreeding, but very instrumental in creating a strain. And how line-breeding, the way it is used in the Founders Program has been beneficial as well.
- He also talks about how the practice of culling has improved the overall quality of his fowl and hopes to encourage others to only breed using healthy birds.
- And let’s not forget nutrition. Dr. Alwar talks about how the information provided by Poultry Nutritionist, Jeff Mattocks has improved the health of his fowl, and how well they are doing through the growth and development stages. As many of you know, Jeff Mattocks is a member and contributor of the Breeders Academy, and many of our member have benefited from Jeffs advice.
- I help him decide which is better, the setting hen or incubator. Many breeders are not aware of the pros and cons of both.
- Alwar talks about the Breeders Academy, and the Founders Program, and how it has really made the difference in the creation and improvement of his strain. And how he is trying to motivate his fellow breeders to start using a structured breeding program, which is what we teach our members at the Breeders Academy.
There’s a lot of great nuggets of information that I know you will not want to miss.
