Before I get to todays show, I hope you’ve been watching our live show on Saturdays. The show is called, “Bred to Perfection Live.” Very different from our weekly podcast. It’s more of a conversation about breeding and raising chickens and gamefowl. We also go deeper into nutrition, health care and disease prevention. Don’t miss the next show.
Now to the Bred to Perfection Podcast!
I have a great interview for you today. We are chatting with my good friend, Royce, who is a Master Breeder from Granite Falls, Washington. Royce is a breeder of Ameraucana and Welsummer chickens. In fact, we became friends because we both shared an interest in the Welsummer Breed. I learned a lot about that breed from talking with Royce.
Through the years, Royce and I would chat about breeding and how our fowl were progressing. We would chat for hours, discussing my latest articles in the Poultry Press. Those were great times.
Well, in this episode, we continue our discussion about breeding and breeding methods. We also talk bout the modern backyard breeder and the obstacles they face, and their future.
There’s a lot of great nuggets of information that I know you will not want to miss.
We talk about:
- Inbreeding, and how to use it properly.
- Importance of keeping a closed flock.
- The dangers of bringing in new blood.
- The importance of using a sub-line.
- The importance of committing to one strain.
- Why our beginning breeders are struggling.
- Why many of the veteran breeders, with lots of experienced and knowledge are not willing to help the beginners today.
- Where to get good, factual, reliable and useful information.
- Why we are in danger of losing many of our breeds. This is true with many domestic chickens, but includes American Games too.
- Why genetics is important, but knowing which genetics are beneficial is even more important.
