This is a Coaching Call with Kevin Neilson, who is one of our members of the Breeders Academy. He is from Florida, and he raises American Games.
We are posting this episode in July of 2020, but this was a coaching call we did on July 20th 2019.
Kevin is getting ready to breed 3 different varieties of American Games, which he wants to develop into strains, these consist of:
- Jumper Kelsos
- Roundheads
- And Greys
In this episode, I help Kevin to develop breeding programs for each of his strains. He wants to make sure his is starting on the right foot, and making sure his is doing thing properly at the right time.
In todays show, we talk with Kevin about:
- He wanted to know if the birds he’s starting with are worth breeding
- Has some questions about their conformation of body.
- He asked about some temperament issues he is have, and wanted to know what to do about it.
- We talked about various traits, and whether or not they could be considered defects.
- We even discuss the “Name Game” and why it really does not matter much when creating a new strain.
- We discuss the topic of perfection, is it attainable?
- He was concerned whether the pale looking faces in his birds was due to the molt or worms, and how to determine what was causing the pale looking faces.
- I also help Kevin to develop a good feeding program for his birds.
- We talk about which birds should be culled, and when is the best time to detect and determine if a bird is a cull.
- I helped him come up with ways to deal with the culls and extra birds, and, how to best cook them to ensure tenderness and good taste.
- What to do about diseases and any birds that are sick. Do you medicate?
- How good should your seed fowl be, before you start attempting to create a strain?
- We talk about the different breeding programs that are available to Kevin, by being a member of the Breeders Academy.
