Natures Influence on Domestication
How we can use the Mechanisms of Evolution to Improve our Selective Breeding Practices
Our Special Guest is Rick Coste, Author of “Evolution Talk.”
Rick is the Host of the popular podcast – “Evolution Talk.” And, he has written a new book, also titled “Evolution Talk – The Who, What, Why, and How Behind the Oldest Story Ever Told.” I’m so glad to have Rick on the show. In fact, I’ve been looking forward to this interview for a long time.
As you can see, I’m a big fan of his work, and have been listening to his show for many years. I have listened to every show, but I do have my favorite episodes. These are not only my favorites, but they are the most relatable to Selective Breeding. This includes:
- Misconceptions about Evolution and Natural Selection
- Genetic Drift
- Mendel and his Peas
- Artificial Selection
- Mitochondrial Eve
- Epigenetics
- The Joy of Mutation
We will be covering these topics during the show, and addressing each of them here in the show notes.
This is going to be a very special episode. We are going to address how Evolution has many similarities with that of Selective Breeding. And I have to say, this is one of my favorite topics. Darwin and Natural selection was my introduction into the science of breeding. You would think it would be the work of Gregor Mendel, and genetics, but he came after Charles Darwin and his work on Natural Selection. And, I was glad it worked out that way too. Not sure if I would have absorbed genetics, if I didn’t first gain a greater understanding how living organisms, such as chickens could change forms and evolve.
We are going to address The Mechanisms of Natural Selection and Evolution, which include:
- The Overproduction of Offspring
- Genetic Variation
- The Struggle for Existence
- The Differential Survival and Reproduction
We will also address other Mechanisms of Evolution, which include:
- Genetic Drift
- Genetic Flow
- The Founder’s Effect
- The Bottleneck Effect
- Speciation
- Epigenetics
There’s a lot of great nuggets of information that I know you will not want to miss.
