It’s sad that so many gamefowl breeders begin with second-rate fowl, when in truth, they don’t need to. This is a big mistake. By beginning with substandard or second-rate fowl, it can be very difficult to improve them. This is especially true when it comes to fowl that also have defects or have a low resistance to disease.
In many cases they don’t realize their mistakes until a number of years have passed, and they have failed to see any significant and measurable results. It is at this time they become extremely frustrated, and give up.
Some leave the hobby with the assumption that there is no such thing as pure fowl, and others stay, but, like so many, resort to a simpler approach, which is the constant infusion of new blood. In other words, they adopt the belief that having a high level of genetic diversity is the best approach.
In an attempt to be scientific, with no regards to the systematic method of breeding, they begin to breed haphazardly. Breeders such as these lose all hope in creating or maintaining a strain. This way of thinking is detrimental to the future of the breed.
I’m here to tell you that, when it comes to American Games, purity of blood and the creation of a strain is the true path, and the creation and maintenance of pure bloodlines is not only possible, but also a necessity. Yet it starts with the acquisition of the right fowl, the seed fowl.
If you want to run a successful gamefowl farm, take your time and find the right fowl for you. Look for high quality brood fowl from a knowledgeable and skillful breeder, and do everything in your power to keep them pure, and improve them each and every generation, without introducing outside blood.
Special Note of Interest: I know many breeders who believe in outcrossing to maintain genetic diversity. There is a better way, and that is “Line-Crossing.” I discuss this subject in greater detail on the Breeders Academy Membership Website in a breeding program call “The Founders Program”. I encourage you to join us and check it out. We also show you how to use proven breeding programs, specifically designed for breeders of American Games.
When I talk with gamefowl breeders, from all over the world, about the art and science of gamefowl breeding, they all share one thing in common, and that is, they want to produce high quality strains that are true representatives of their breed, and have superior performance ability. They are sick and tired of buying poor quality birds, and are forced into beginning with hybrid crosses. We I’m here to tell you that I can show you have to create a true strain with fowl that are not related. Breeding gamefowl that are uniform and consistent is the best approach and not as hard as you may think.
