What is the role of an American Gamefowl guardian? It begins by protecting American Games from those who wish to harm them. Remember, by protecting American Games, we are also protecting the future of all fowl. For instance, there are numerous Animal Rights Organizations who are highly motivated in the extermination of the breed, and if allowed to accomplish their goals, would exterminate all breeds of chickens. They believe there is no reason to have them, and that they should be destroyed. In their minds extinction is the only solution. It’s ironic, but these are the same people who are supposed to be looking out for the welfare of all animals.

WHAT CONSTITUTES A STRAIN?
To fully understand what constitutes a strain, we must first recognize that all breeds of domestic chickens and gamefowl, that exist today, owe their origins to the Wild Red Junglefowl of South East Asia, and that they are the product of selective breeding.
PLAYING THE “NAME GAME”
For as long as I can remember the “Name Game” has been played to the hilt. What is the “Name Game?” It’s the label sellers place on their fowl to make them more appealing to buyers. American Games have a long history of breeders who have made a name for themselves from the reputation of their fowl. Because of this their fowl have lived long after they have gone, or at least their names have.
Let’s become breeders again!
It has been my experience that most backyard breeders are unaware of what it takes to create and maintain a strain. Or they are afraid of the potential consequences if they do it wrong. Some lack patience, while others want something for nothing. Many believe it’s better to let the so-called “Big Time Breeders” in the magazines, with large fancy ads, do it for them.
IMPROVING YOUR FOWL THROUGH A “ZERO-DEFECT” POLICY
As many of you probably know, American Games are incredible fowl, but are known to have numerous weaknesses. These weaknesses are recessive faults that are caused by genetic impurities that are passed down from generation to generation.
