I learned the value of starting out with the best fowl possible:
I learned early on that you can’t create a high-quality strain from another breeder’s culls. Their second-rate birds will take you years of selective breeding, and lots of money in feed that you will never get back.
There is an old saying among breeders: “The quality of your future strain depends of the fowl you start with.”This is common sense, but very few practice this principle. They don’t try to get the best fowl possible. In most cases, they are starting out with substandard birds and then wonder why it’s not working out for them.
If you start out with substandard birds, or other breeders’ culls, it will take you many years to reach your goals.
